Between June 10th and June 16th Australia hosted Men’s Health Week, coinciding with an awards ceremony held in Brisbane at the start of the week.
One of the award nominees happens to be very close to the heart of Elements, as five of its members are our own Happy Living residents: Roy McGregor, John Harris, Bill Gofton, Tony Merucci and Fred Laughton. These five all volunteer at Circle of Men, a charity first established in 2015, where they spend every Friday at a local care home to help alleviate the loneliness and isolation of elderly men who are unable to get out and about without assistance.
While Circle of Men didn’t get the award, we know our five volunteers are absolute winners. In like-minded communities such as ours taking care of fellow human beings comes naturally – whether these are your neighbours or living on the other side of the globe. No-one ever feels isolated or lonely at Elements. At our village, spending time on your own is always a choice.
Many of our social gatherings have ulterior motives in mind and take up collections for charities local, far and wide. Craft and Chat have been knitting baby hats for years, while the workshop maintains and mends furnishings and tools for local churches and families in need. Our dinner dances, special events and other social occasions usually include a raffle (with really great prizes) where proceeds go to support local and national charities. There’s never any obligation to contribute; however, we find that when people are happy, stimulated and positive, helping others becomes second nature…which is probably why Elements community members are always willing to lend a hand.
