A Taste of Japan – the Elements July Dinner

August’s dinner has a lot to live up to, as July’s edition has been voted by many as the best so far! This month, Elements Happy Living residents were treated to a celebration of Japanese culture, entertainment and cuisine.

As the meal was prepared by Restaurant and Catering Queensland’s lifetime member – Brian Pozzey (Pozz to his friends) and Matt Lee – recipient of countless national and international competitions – it’s no surprise dinner was a Michelin Star experience. Delicious dishes of salmon fillet with soba noodles in miso broth, teriyaki chicken with black and sticky rice cake in teriyaki broth, and wasabi ice cream, rainbow cake, goji berries, yuzu cream and green tea dust went down to the chorus of ecstatic comments!

Happily, everyone had been given a lesson in the donning of the traditional Yukata beforehand and knew how to loosen the obi (sash). And to make this lesson even easier (or more complicated, depending on quantity) sake was served on arrival. Staff, residents, friends and family looked stunning in their Japanese Yukata and Japanesesque outfits.

For entertainment, the community centre was given the pleasure of a talk by Kenzo San. Kenzo is a Japanese rugby enthusiast who enraptured the room with comic tales of his arrival in Australia, and slow and confusing mastery of Australia’s world-renowned take on the English language. Yet again, the obi’s needed to be loosened another notch. This time due to the belly laughs.

How this month’s July dinner can be beaten, no-one knows. But we’ll have a lot of fun trying.
