The Spice of Life: Good Food, Amazing Company

Brisbane Retirement Village

Nothing spices up the lives of our residents quite like a fragrant, flavour-filled spread that packs a serious punch! This month’s Dinner was no exception as our residents were treated to an authentic Moroccan feast and a total sensory sensation prepared by an award-winning Chef.

At Elements, our themed monthly dinners are the most anticipated event on the resident’s social calendar. The team, including many of our residents take no short cuts when it comes to arranging a fabulous night for everyone with each detail considered to ensure the décor and arrangements pair perfectly with the menu. This time around we were lucky enough to have guest chef Matt Lee and guest speaker Nancy Haxton join us.

It was an evening filled with delicious food, inspiring stories, and superb company.

A Feast Fit For Royalty

Each month, our Elements residents are taken on a culinary journey. They can enjoy a cultural experience and wrap their tastebuds around flavours and cuisine from across the world and get a feel for the culture without needing to leave the village gates! Better yet, the Elements team ensure the authenticity of these tasty themed dishes by arranging esteemed Chefs.

This month the village was treated to a Moroccan Menu, carefully curated by the award-winning Chef, Matt Lee, who spoilt us with a selection of dishes featuring a medley of spices and flavour. Mains included a choice of marinated lamb with fruit quinoa, cous cous, and tagine of vegetables or Moroccan braised chicken with quinoa cous cous, asparagus and broccolini. Dessert was a mouth-watering orange meskouta with date salsa, cinnamon cream, and pine nut crumble. It was safe to say there were no leftovers.

Dinner with a Purpose

In addition to experiencing phenomenal cuisine, our residents also share their evening with a special guest. The Elements team will arrange a guest speaker to address the group, share a story, history, inspiration, education and information, and entertainment. From all walks of life, they join us and offer something unique to share with our residents each month.

This time around we welcomed Nancy Haxton, also known as the Wandering Journo, who travels in her trusty Kombi van. Nancy’s story is one fuelled by her passion of revealing injustice by giving people who do not have access to media the chance to share their experiences.

Nancy has previously worked as an ABC Radio Current Affairs journalist, although now spreads her message predominately through podcasts. She shared with the residents the story of her time reporting on the riots within the Woomera Detention Centre, which won her a Walkely Award in 2001. She also spoke of her time documenting how the justice system failed intellectually disabled people who had been sexually abused. This heartbreaking story won her another Walkely Award in 2012. Podcasts and writings of these experiences and more can be found on her website https://nancehaxton.com.au/.

Sharing More Than Just A Meal

Living at Elements continually provides opportunities for residents to form friendships and connections with one another and with the many guests which are invited to these events each month. Nurturing relationships and fostering a sense of family within the grounds of Elements is at the core of everything our team do when hosting events.

We are a community within a community. Life is a feast, and it should be shared.
