In October last year, Logan bid farewell to one of its beautiful community heroes when The Salvation Army’s Major Merv Hopper passed away. On Friday 3rd August 2012, Metropolitan Funerals and Elements Retirement Living @ Springwood held the inaugural fundraising event to continue the work of Majors Merv and Fay Hopper.
Over fifty guests enjoyed the crisp morning air and morning tea in our wonderful and tranquil Garden of Hana (Elements very own Zen garden). The Zen garden provided a beautiful backdrop as we remembered the selfless work of Merv and Faye and enjoyed the company of the Hopper’s family, The Salvation Army representatives, supporters, residents, community members and Cr Steve Swenson, Division 3 Logan.
Colin Hopper and sister Heather recounted several stories of selflessness, compassion, community spirit and an unending dedication to their family’s well-being that underpinned all that their parents did. Guests were moved and inspired and we thank the Hopper family for sharing those wonderful, life affirming stories and photos.
A heartfelt thanks too, to all that made the event so memorable and successful and importantly, for helping to raise close to $1,000 funds to continue the work at The Salavation Army centre in Logan. We look forward to many more years together. Thank you Merv, Faye, Colin and Heather for the inspiration!
We’ve also collated are a few photos from the morning on our Facebook Page for you to enjoy and share.
Acknowledging Majors Merv and Fay Hopper
Every community has its heroes, some are very well known; whilst others work away in the background not expecting to be noticed as they change the world for others. In October last year Logan bid farewell to one of its beautiful community heroes when The Salvation Army Major Merv Hopper passed away. It is not that Merv was a Salvation Army Major that made him a hero it was his dedication to his community that makes him a local hero to many.
For many years both Merv and his wife Fay (who passed away in 2007) shook their Salvos tin at the Logan Hyderdome collecting our loose change, sharing a smile and letting people know that their little bit really mattered and made a difference to someone who needed the Salvos.
It never mattered to Merv if it was 5cents or $5.00 he always radiated a smile. What many of us may not know about Merv is that in his last couple of years he lived with pain from a melanoma in his leg, a pain that never stopped him from making a difference.
Merv and Fay’s Love for family, their unending Faith in God and selflessness in support of their community is why we honour and pay tribute to them.
